It gained popularity after Twitter introduced limitations on how many tweets users can read daily. An unpopular measure was introduced to combat data scraping tools that are present on Twitter. After bad reactions from users Twitter gave up on this new feature.
Threads is a Meta-produced Twitter-like social network. Besides Meta’s alternative, there were other Twitter alternatives, one of the most popular is Truth Social, endorsed by Donal Trump after former Twitter management banned his account.
Telegram was also gaining popularity as a Twitter alternative since the start of the war in Ukraine, as less strict and more liberal towards pro-Russian accounts.
